Laptop and Computer Recycling
E-Waste, a local problem with a local solution at the Hackery. Our favourite pastime is computer equipment. Our founder has over a decade of experience in the recycling industry. While we always prioritize re-use of our equipment, there comes a time when some electronics need to be recycled. The Hackery takes ethical recycling seriously. We believe in employing local people to dismantle equipment, right in our facility, making a smaller carbon footprint. We do not ship any of our laptops or computer scrap overseas—even the really ancient ones.
I never want to see my decrepit laptop again. Can you use it?
We welcome any quantities of working or non-working laptops, computers or parts for recycling or re-use. Please check out our full list of items we accept
What happens to my old computer equipment?
When we deem equipment not re-usable, it is stripped of its removable components like RAM, hard drives, wireless cards, etc. for re-use or circuit board recycling. Power supplies and chargers are broken down to their basic components for recycling. All of our hard drives are thoroughly wiped to remove any data before re-use or are physically destroyed. All of the work is done right here in Vancouver.
Where does the scrap go?
Our parted-out laptops, computer scrap(plastics and fans), CRTs, and LCDs go to the provincially-approved recycling program or E-Stewards exclusively. All recovered metals are recycled with North Star Recycling. Our loose batteries and old cellphones go to a smelting facility through the RBRC program. If you require a list of our downstream vendors, please give us a call.
Do you provide a pick up service?
Yes, and it's free in Vancouver/Burnaby/Richmond city limits. All you need to do is fill out our pick up form.
Who can I ask more about recycling?
If you have any questions regarding what we do, or where our recyclables go, please call us to speak with our founder, David Repa.
